The mission of the Silvermont Opportunity Center is to invigorate and enhance the quality of life for adults over the age of sixty in Transylvania County by providing a range of services, activities, programs, and opportunities designed to encourage active aging and improve the health and well-being of older adults in our community.
We invite those 60 and over to come enjoy education, exercise, arts & crafts, music, socialization and more five days a week. Programs and activities are advertised in our monthly newsletter. Most all of the programs at the Senior Center are free. There are a few programs occasionally offered that have a minimal fee.
According to the 2014 data by the NC Department of Commerce Transylvania County has 34,047 residents, 12,226 of which are older adults age 60 and older (35.9%). It is the mission of the Silvermont Opportunity Center to encourage active aging by offering programs that strengthen the mind and body while fostering socialization to help older adults avoid isolation. It is proven that active aging promotes healthy longevity and keeps seniors living independently in their homes as long as possible.

History of the Silvermont Mansion
In 1902, Joseph and Elizabeth Silversteen moved to Transylvania County from Pennsylvania. They started a family and amassed their fortunes while residing in Transylvania County. They built the large 33-room colonial house with spacious grounds. After their death, through a gracious donation, the home remains as a gift to the citizens of Transylvania County. WCCA is proud to have use of the lovely space for our program.
