Thursday, March 16th from 4-7 pm at the Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville

Kindergarten registration for children turning 5 on or before Aug. 31 is coming up in April, and Henderson County Public Schools is hosting the annual Kindergarten Readiness Rally on March 16 to get parents and students on track for the start of the new school year. The rally will take place from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville.

Co-sponsored by Western Carolina Community Action, Smart Start of Henderson County, the Children & Family Resource Center and HCPS, the rally will give parents the opportunity to confirm their designated school district, learn which documents to bring to registration, and meet their children’s teachers and administrators. While parents learn about registration, children can participate in fun learning activities parents can replicate at home to support school readiness.More than 20 local nonprofit organizations that work with children and families will host activities or provide free give-aways, including Blue Ridge Health, United Way, El Centro, Hands On! A Child's Gallery and the Mineral & Lapidary Museum. A school bus will also be on site to introduce the children to school bus safety and to ease any anxieties they – or their parents – might have about riding the bus to school come August.

Every kindergartner who attends can take a book home, choosing from old favorites like, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” “Goodnight Moon,” and “Whistle for Willy” and newer books, like “Dragons Love Tacos” and “Dear Mr. Blueberry.” Parents with a student already enrolled in school can still benefit from attending the rally by meeting their kindergartner’s future teachers and administrators, and by asking any questions about the kindergarten program at HCPS.
